Paradise Ayurveda & Yoga Retreat

A tiny boutique retreat with Kalaripayattu, culture and the sea minutes away

Ayurveda, the sea and the living culture of Kerala

Paradise Ayurveda & Yoga Retreat is a small Ayurvedic centre in Mararikulam near Alappuzha, just a few minutes from the long sandy Marari Beach. Unlike large Ayurvedic hospitals or luxury resorts, Paradise has an intimate character, combining individually guided Ayurvedic treatment, comfortable accommodation and close contact with the nature and culture of Kerala.

The centre is part of Paradise Boutique Resort. The accommodation buildings are set among tropical vegetation and coconut palms, and the entire property feels more like a small private retreat than a conventional hotel. Its capacity is limited to only a few rooms, and even after the planned expansion it is intended to remain a very intimate place.

The surrounding landscape is crossed by small waterways and backwaters, so you can combine walks and swimming in the Arabian Sea with canoe rides and excursions into the countryside. The centre also offers fishing in the backwaters, cycling, village tours and houseboat trips on Vembanad Lake.

Two Ayurvedic therapy sessions every day

Behind the informal atmosphere of this small resort lies a surprisingly intensive treatment programme. A stay begins with a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, assessment of your constitution and Nadi Pareeksha, pulse diagnosis. The doctor then prepares an individual treatment plan and monitors its progress on a daily basis.

A distinctive advantage of Paradise is the inclusion of two therapy sessions every day: approximately 90 minutes in the morning and a further 30 minutes in the evening. The package also includes an Ayurvedic diet, herbal drinks, morning yoga and evening yoga or meditation.

The centre offers three principal lengths of therapeutic stay:

  • 7-day Rejuvenation Package – an introductory restorative and relaxing programme
  • 14-day Restoration Package – a deeper cleansing programme also including Virechana
  • 21-day Transformation Package – the most comprehensive therapeutic and Panchakarma programme

The therapies themselves are not simply selected from a fixed menu. They are adjusted by the doctor according to your age, constitution, health condition and response to the ongoing treatment.

Treatment rooms with an unusual atmosphere

One of the strongest impressions at Paradise comes from the treatment rooms themselves. Unlike the neutral interiors of conventional hotel spas, these spaces have a distinctly Keralan and spiritual character. Traditional wooden Ayurvedic treatment tables are complemented by brass oil lamps, vessels used during therapies and large sculptural reliefs inspired by Indian temple iconography. Earthy colours and subdued lighting create an almost ritual and meditative atmosphere.

Panchakarma and a wide range of traditional therapies

Paradise provides traditional Ayurvedic treatments ranging from Abhyanga, herbal steam therapies and Shirodhara to different forms of Dhara, Kizhi and Pizhichil, as well as Nasya and localised oil treatments. When medically indicated, the centre also uses the classical cleansing procedures Virechana, Basti and Vamana, meaning that a longer stay can be structured as genuine Panchakarma rather than simply a series of oil massages.

Treatment programmes may focus on general regeneration and exhaustion as well as musculoskeletal problems, arthritis and joint pain, neurological conditions, stress, sleep disorders or metabolic imbalance. The precise combination of therapies always depends on the doctor's assessment.

Kalaripayattu and Keralan culture within the retreat

This is one of the areas in which Paradise differs significantly from most other Ayurvedic centres. The property includes a traditional kalari, a dedicated space for Kalaripayattu, the ancient martial art of Kerala. It is operated by MVG CVN Kalari Sangam, a school whose tradition dates back to 1951. You can not only watch demonstrations but also take part in lessons.

A place for creativity and discovery during treatment

In addition to yoga and Kalaripayattu, the centre offers activities such as clay modelling and pottery, Kerala cooking classes, cycling, fishing, village excursions, canoe and houseboat trips, as well as cultural programmes connected with traditional forms such as Kathakali and Mohiniyattam. This variety also creates interesting possibilities for small thematic and group retreats.

Ayurvedic diet, yoga and meditation

During therapeutic stays you receive a sattvic vegetarian diet adapted to the doctor's recommendations and the course of treatment. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included together with a daily herbal drink. The daily rhythm is complemented by morning yoga and pranayama, normally between 7:00 and 8:00, followed later in the day by evening yoga or guided meditation.

A small resort with surprisingly comfortable rooms

The accommodation is contemporary and comfortable. The air-conditioned rooms are spacious, have private bathrooms and, depending on the category, a veranda or balcony. Rooms feature modern bathrooms, large beds, generous storage space and, in some categories, a refrigerator, seating area and covered terrace.

Current information lists 6 rooms in operation, with a planned expansion to a total of 12 rooms (2 Standard and 10 Premium). We would primarily describe Paradise as a very small centre particularly suitable for individual guests, couples and smaller groups.

Marari Beach just minutes away

Marari is one of the long sandy beaches of the Kerala coast, and it can be reached from Paradise within a few minutes. During a stay of several weeks, a simple morning or evening walk to the Arabian Sea can become a natural part of everyday life.

What makes Paradise special?

We would particularly recommend Paradise if you are looking for seriously guided Ayurvedic treatment without spending several weeks in an environment that feels like a hospital. It is a very small centre offering daily medical supervision, two therapy sessions per day and the possibility of classical Panchakarma. At the same time, it provides comfortable resort-style accommodation, easy access to Marari Beach, yoga and meditation, its own kalari and an unusually varied selection of cultural and creative activities.

Paradise is not simply a place to come for Ayurvedic procedures. It is a small Keralan retreat where treatment can be combined with the sea, movement, creativity and an encounter with the living culture of South India.
