Atharva Ayurveda

One medical family, two ways to stay: a city clinic in Pune or a lakeside resort

A family tradition of Ayurvedic physicians

One of the most distinctive features of Atharva Ayurveda is the Sardeshmukh family, whose Ayurvedic tradition is said to extend over more than eleven generations. A special place within this lineage is held by Nadi Pariksha, traditional pulse diagnosis, passed down within the family from generation to generation.

Dr Sadanand Sardeshmukh has been in clinical practice since 1967. He became the first Ph.D. holder in the field of Ayurveda in the state of Maharashtra and in 2017 received the National Dhanwantri Ayurveda Award from the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Alongside his clinical and academic career he has researched Ayurveda as supportive care for oncology patients.

The tradition continues with Dr Sukumar Sardeshmukh, an Ayurvedic physician and specialist in Nadi Pariksha in practice since 2006. He is Managing Director of Atharva Nature Healthcare, initiated the Panchakarma and De-Stress programmes at Ayurvedgram and lectures on Ayurveda internationally.

Nadi Pariksha, pulse diagnosis

The initial assessment includes Nadi Pariksha, the traditional diagnostic method based on pulse examination, which an experienced physician uses as one of the tools to assess your constitution and current state of balance. A personal treatment programme is then prepared from the consultation, your health condition and your needs. This individual approach, rather than a fixed programme for every guest, is one of the core principles of the care here.

Panchakarma and Ayurvedic therapies

The centre offers individually designed Panchakarma programmes as well as shorter De-Stress stays. The exact therapies are selected by the doctor according to your condition. Classical treatments may include Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Swedana, basti-and-janu-basti" class="autolink">Kati Basti, Manya Basti and Nasya, together with other therapies that form part of traditional Panchakarma.

The stay is not designed simply as a relaxation or wellness programme. The emphasis is on medically guided Ayurvedic care, with the intensity and composition of the treatment adapted to each individual.

In-house Ayurvedic products and research

Atharva Nature Healthcare has been manufacturing Ayurvedic and herbal products since 2002. Its portfolio includes more than 250 products using over 400 species of medicinal plants, with its own quality control and research and development. It makes traditional oils, ghee, powders and herbal formulations, tablets, herbal teas, spices and natural cosmetics, partly from its own medicinal plant cultivation.

The family and cooperating specialists have published work on the standardisation of traditional preparations and on supportive Ayurvedic care for patients undergoing conventional oncology treatment. For interested guests, a stay can be complemented by lectures with Dr Sukumar Sardeshmukh on Ayurvedic principles and their relevance to everyday life.

Two ways to experience the same care

Atharva Ayurveda offers two different options for authentic Ayurvedic treatment near Pune, both under the guidance of the same medical team.

  • Ayurvedgram in Pune is an urban, clinic-based stay. You sleep in a selected hotel or apartment and travel to the centre for daily consultations and treatments, combining individually guided Ayurveda with everyday life in a modern Indian city.
  • Toyam Resort, about an hour from Pune in a quiet natural setting by a lake, is a residential retreat where accommodation, treatments, meals, yoga and meditation are all provided within the resort.

Both follow the same principle of individual Ayurvedic care, while letting you choose between the experience of modern Pune and the tranquillity of a resort surrounded by nature.
